(Joe versus the volcano) Alternatives of Traditional Education: Distance Learning
No commentsBy Randy Wheeler
Some decades ago students could not even dream to attend a college or a university without leaving home. Today, it is possible. Online learning brings education in every home. This new way of getting education is growing more popular among the students. However, some of them still do not understand the essence of online learning completely. This article provides the main pros and cons of distance learning.
Pros of online learning
The core aim of online learning is the same as of traditional learning. However, it has a number of distinctions. Benefits of distance education are as follows:
1.Independence. A student can easily combine his/her studies and work. He/she can study any time it is convenient for him/her, in the morning or at night.
2.Flexibility. Online learning allows making up a personal schedule for studying. A student can make a plan and teachers will adjust to it, not vice versa. On top of that, students can start studies any time of the year. Online courses are not confined to any time limits.
3.Lower costs. Online education is much cheaper than traditional education. Moreover, a student does not have to pay for housing or other college expenses.
4.Distance. College location does not matter any more. Any student can study at any college he/she likes as everything is on the Internet now.
Cons of online learning
Alongside various benefits, there are some drawbacks of distance education:
1.First of all, a student is always on his/her own. Regardless of the fact that online colleges provide video chats, students do not have the feeling of community.
2.Then, students should have a number of technical skills to succeed in online learning. Computer and Internet access are inevitable tools of online education.

Obama Grants: A College Education Within Reach
By Fred Jackson
For many people, a bright future starts with good education. The President has on many occasions emphasized the need for a strong education system. Free money through grants and scholarships is only the beginning.
Although the economy has dramatically fallen, college prices have continued to rise for many years. Tuition and housing costs often far exceed scholarship offers. Many young adults choose to forgo college because of the cost. Single, working moms are a big section of this group. Helping single mothers get an education helps their families and future employers. Creating college grants for moms is one way the President is dealing with this issue. There is no difference between Federal Pell Grants and Obama grants. The name “Obama grants” came as a result of the President’s emphasis on educating moms. In the 2009-2010 school year, students could get a grant of up to $5,350. The primary goal is to encourage single moms to return to school, and by 2012 they could receive as much as $5,400. With these grants for moms, they can pay for tuition, books or any other school-related expenses.
There’s also another great program: the American Opportunity Tax Credit. Under this incentive program, education costs up to $4,000 are cleared. This $4,000 write off can be a big help to many students. Single moms often fall into this group, so these programs are particularly beneficial to them. Another great factor is that students aren’t particularly targeted based on what or where they study. Diversity is encouraged. Moms and students of all kinds can go to school with a little less to worry about.
With his actions President Obama has confirmed his belief in this issue. With the recent passage of the economic stimulus plan, a lot of college loans will be offered by the government. In addition, the government is focusing on helping schools improve teaching and students improve performance. Higher education at a 2-year college can be a great option, and there is emphasis being put on that fact. A 2-year degree or the time spent learning a technical school from a community college can be a tremendous asset.
In 2007 Obama stated, “We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That’s the best investment we can make in our future.” With the measures he has taken to this point, the President has demonstrated he means his words. If the goal is to educate as many as possible, making grants available for mothers is a good step. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
